2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

“Seavey's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Caravina is one of the very finest values in Napa Valley. Supple, radiant and expressive, the 2013 is a pure joy to taste, as it expresses plenty of site-specific nuance in a more approachable style than the estate's flagships. Bright red cherry, plum, spice, mint, licorice and sweet floral notes meld into the soft, open-knit finish. This is a real overachiever, especially for the price.” 93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2015.

Wine Profile

Tasting Notes

Bright red berries dance on the tongue with intriguing hints of sweet tobacco, anise, clove and kirsch. Full bodied, with a formidable backbone of chewy, mouth-coating tannins, this wine envelopes your palate. Smoky and somewhat brooding, this wine shows the power of the Seavey estate and makes a strong statement about the monumental 2013 vintage. Pair this wine with a celebratory meal, decanting it for 30 to 60 minutes before enjoying.

Ratings

“The 2013 is outstanding, with a deep purple color, a sweet nose of chocolate, dusty, loamy soil notes, a touch of roasted herbs, silky tannins and a medium to full-bodied, very sexy and lush style.”
—90 points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, October 2015.

Vineyard Notes

The year 2013 marks Seavey’s 15th vintage of estate-produced Caravina Cabernet. The grapes for this wine were sourced from a unique tapestry of steep hillside blocks from our estate vineyard notable for their intense and youthful flavor profiles. Following a winter with scant rain, a warm, dry spring gave way to ideal summer conditions and then a mild harvest period that allowed us to patiently pick each block at full ripeness.

Production Notes

Winemaking followed classic Bordeaux methods with whole-berry fermentation. In the cool of the early morning harvest, grapes were promptly de-stemmed and the uncrushed berries were gently transferred into fermentation tanks. In order to carefully manage the tannins and resulting wine texture, the grapes were neither crushed nor run through a pump. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels (40% new) for 19 months before bottling in June 2015. The blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Merlot, and 2.5% Petit Verdot.
