2022 Caravina Cabernet

2022 Caravina Cabernet
“Seavey’s 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina is a bit more herbal than the estate bottling (this comes from the estate too), with pronounced sage notes accenting black cherries on the nose. It’s medium to full-bodied, streamlined and less concentrated but very drinkable, with silky tannins and a long, harmonious finish.” – Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate (Feb. 2025) 92 points
Tasting Notes
Th2 2022 is an exuberant showing of Caravina Cabernet featuring juicy candied red fruits including cherry and plums with a savory bay leaf undercurrent. Barrel flavors woven into the fruit lift the fruit and accent with spice notes of cedar and toasted oak. The mouthfeel leans more elegant than previous vintages of Caravina. Gentle tannins are coating, but yield a soft finish with a lingering essence of cherry.

“Functioning as the entry-level wine of this great estate, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its deep ruby/plum hue is followed by a beautiful bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, roasted herbs, and spring flowers, with a kiss of background oak. It’s medium-bodied, as solid depth of fruit, and ripe, polished tannins. Drink this ripe, front end-loaded, incredibly satisfying Cabernet Sauvignon over the coming decade.”

Vineyard Notes
Seavey’s 24th vintage of single-vineyard estate Caravina Cabernet comes entirely from grapes grown on the steep hillside blocks of our estate, which we have been farming for over forty years. 2022 featured a spurt of heat near the end of the growing season, adding a subtle candy element to the 2022 Caravina that sets it apart from other vintages and makes it incredibly satisfying to drink.
Production Notes
Following classic Bordeaux methods, we separately harvest and vinify each vineyard block. In the cool of the night in September 2022, these grapes were harvested by-hand and then promptly de-stemmed, rigorously sorted, and gently transferred into fermentation tanks to carefully manage the tannins and resulting wine texture. After fermentation, the grapes were drained off the skins. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels (40% new) for 20 months before bottling in June 2024.
