The 2009 vintage was the 20th bottling of our Seavey Cabernet. It was had-crafted from 100% Estate fruit, as it has been since our maiden vintage of 1990. Production in 2009 was lower than usual, with only 630 cases of Seavey Cabernet produced. The growing season was warm, without significant heat spikes or cold spells, and the moderate weather continued well into fall. This provided our fruit an unrushed opportunity to mature a broad and deep flavor profile with powerful aromatics, supportive structure and graphite minerality consistent with our vineyard’s soils.
The aromatics are rich with blueberry, dark cherry, violets, toasted oak and spice. Your palate is greeted with intense ripe blueberry, racy black currant, cocoa, baking spices, graphite, fresh violets and cigar box. In your mouth it delivers warm graham cracker, red current, melted licorice, tobacco, cedar allspice, boysenberry and violets all entertain your senses and carry through on the finish. The broad and full spectrum of fruit, firm supportive tannins, expansive juicy mid-palate, savory baking spice and noteworthy minerality conspire to provide you with a wine that may be enjoyed now, or cellared for many years.
"Seavey’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate explodes from the glass with deep, resonant fruit. Incense, smoke, tobacco and melted road tar flow effortlessly from this big, full-bodied wine. There is no shortage of fruit or tannin in this large-scaled, firm Cabernet Sauvignon. Readers will need to be patient, but there is little denying the 2009 is a jewel of a wine. The 2009 is shaping up to be another magnificent wine from Seavey and oenologist Philippe Melka. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
Seavey flies a little under the radar, but savvy, price-conscious readers will want to pay attention to these Cabernets, which remain some of the most distinctive in Napa Valley. The estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon typically sees 18 months in French oak (50% new) and includes a dollop of Petit Verdot.

of Conn Valley east of the Meadowood Resort. Philippe Melka has been the consultant here for
many years and recognizes the challenges of these dry farmed sites. Extraction, richness and
power are never an issue, but taming the tannins is, and Melka has generally done a very fine
job in doing so. The introduction of a second wine, Caravina, has only added to the prestige and
quality of the top wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon. "
